ALEXANDER T. STEWART, one of the famous merchant princes of New York, was born near the city of Belfast, Ireland,
in 1803, and before he was eight years of age was left an orphan without any near relatives, save an aged grandfather.
The grandfather being a pious Methodist wanted to make a minister of young Stewart, and accordingly put him in
a school with that end in view and he graduated at Trinity College, in Dublin. When scarcely twenty years of age
he came to New York. His first employment was that of a teacher, but accident soon made him a merchant. Entering
into business relations with an experienced man of his acquaintance he soon found himself with' the rent of a store
on his hands and alone in a new enterprise. Mr. Stewart's business grew rapidly in all directions, but its founder
had executive ability sufficient for any and all emergencies, and in time his house became one of the greatest
mercantile establishments of modern times, and the name of Stewart famous. Mr. Stewart's death occurred April 10,
