CHRISTOPHER CARSON, better known as "KIT CARSON;" was an American trapper and scout who gained a wide
reputation for his frontier work. He was a native of Kentucky, born December 24th, 1809. He grew to manhood there,
developing a natural inclination for adventure in the pioneer experiences in his native state. When yet a young
man he became quite well known on the frontier. He served as a guide to Gen. Fremont in his Rocky Mountain explorations
and enlisted in the army. He was an officer in the United States service in both the Mexican war and the great
Civil war, and in the latter received a brevet of brigadier general for meritorious service. His death occurred
May 23, 1868.
