JOHN R. THORNTON.
John R. Thornton, familiarly and lovingly known to his friends as "Jack" Thornton, is serving as supervisor
of Solano county and is a veteran of the World war with a record of conspicuous service overseas. He was born in
the city of San Francisco, a son of George Thornton, and was reared in Vallejo, from the high school of which city
he was graduated in 1908. When this country entered the World war in the spring of 1917 Mr. Thornton enlisted and
was assigned to Company G of the Three Hundred and Sixty third Regiment of Infantry, a part of the Ninety first
Division, and with that command saw much active service in France. He was first sergeant of his company. In the
Meuse-Argonne drive he brought in eighteen German prisoners and was cited for bravery for this act of conspicuous
valor in battle. Unhappily, in that campaign he received wounds which have left him with a permanent disability.
In 1919 Mr. Thornton was appointed by the governor to fill a vacancy on the board of supervisors of Solano county
and in the ensuing election was chosen to continue on that board. In the succeeding campaign he was reelected and
is thus now serving his third term. Besides this civic service he has other interests and is the manager of the
Industrial Finance Company of Vallejo. He takes an active and helpful part in the general commercial and industrial
affairs of the community and is a member of the board of directors of the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce. He is a
member of the American Legion and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; is a Mason of high degree and a noble of the
Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, affiliated with Ben Ali temple; is a past sachem (1914) of
Samoset tribe of the Improved Order of Red Men, and is a past exalted ruler (1917) of the Benevolent Protective
Order of Elks. Despite the physical handicap laid upon him by the war, Mr. Thornton is untiring in his devotion
to the interests of his home town and county, and there is no one who gives more wholeheartedly of personal service
in that behalf than he.
