HENRY A. SPIEGEL.
Henry A. Spiegel, a veteran of the World war with an overseas record, a member of the firm of Lutenneger &
Spiegel, doing business as the Vallejo Sporting Goods Supply, a member of the directorate of the Vallejo Chamber
of Commerce and one of the best known and most progressive young merchants in that city, is a native son of California
and all his life has been spent in this state save for the period spent in service with the American Expeditionary
Forces in France during the time of this country's participation in the World war.
Mr. Spiegel was born in the city of Stockton on September 17, 1891, and was reared on a farm in Shasta county,
in the schools of which county he had his schooling. When twenty years of age he became employed in the service
of the Wells Fargo Express Company at Sacramento and was thus engaged for eighteen months, at the end of which
time he became employed in the wholesale grocery house of Lindley & Company. He later became employed as shipping
clerk in the Sacramento plant of Armour & Company and after awhile was made a traveling representative for
that concern, a line which he abandoned to enter army service. Mr. Spiegel was attached to Battery C of the Three
Hundred and Forty seventh Field Artillery, Ninety first Division, and with that gallant command participated in
some very strenuous action in France, the "Fighting Ninety first" making a record that contributed greatly
to the glory of American arms in France.
Upon the completion of his military service Mr. Spiegel returned to Sacramento and in partnership with W. F. Peterson
became engaged in the commission business, a line in which he continued engaged until in February, 1919, when,
in partnership with A. G. Lutenneger, he bought the establishment of the Vallejo Sporting Goods Supply and has
since been engaged in business at Vallejo, with a well equipped and admirably appointed establishment at 345 Georgia
street, and has done very well, this firm carrying everything in the sporting goods line essential to the requirements
of the fine trade area centering at Vallejo. Mr. Spiegel is regarded as the practical organizer of the Vallejo
Trap Shooting Club, second in point of membership of all such clubs in California, and has done much to promote
local interest in trap shooting and kindred sports throughout this region. He also is an active and influential
member of the local branch of the National Rifle Association and has a wide reputation as a marksman of unusual
skill.
In 1921, at Sacramento, Henry A. Spiegel was united in marriage to Miss Louise E. Stirn, who was born in that city,
and they have a pleasant home at Vallejo. Mr. and Mrs. Spiegel are members of the Roman Catholic church and Mr.
Spiegel is an active member of Vallejo Council No. 874, Knights of Columbus. He takes an active and interested
part in the activities of the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the board of directors of that energetic
body as well as a director of the influential Rotary Club. He also is one of the active members of Vallejo Post
No. 104, American Legion, and is likewise affiliated with the local lodge of the Benevolent Protective Order of
Elks.
