CHRIS J. PAPPAS.
Chris J. Pappas, a well established and widely known merchant tailor at Vallejo and a gallant soldier of the Balkan
wars, is of European birth but is a citizen of the United States and a resident of California by choice and the
exercise of a fine selective judgment, for he long ago determined that opportunities awaited him here such as he
reasonably could not hope for in his native land. Mr. Pappas was born in Coumi in the kingdom of Greece, July 1,
1886, and was there reared and had his schooling. He early took to the trade of tailor and became a competent and
skilled craftsman in that line, an expert coat maker.
In 1910, he then being twenty three years of age, Mr. Pappas came to the United States and made his way to California,
locating at San Francisco, where he found no difficulty in obtaining employment as a coat maker in the leading
tailoring establishments of that city. He later found employment along the same line in Vallejo and was here until
in 1912, when he returned to his native land and for three years thereafter rendered service as a soldier, thus
participating in the activities of the Greek army during the memorable Balkan wars of that period. While there
he married. Upon the completion of his military service, in 1915, Mr. Pappas returned to Vallejo and resumed his
vocation as a tailor in one of the local tailoring establishments. In 1919 he set up in business for himself and
has since been thus engaged, with an excellent establishment at 425 Sacramento street, where he is doing very well,
commanding by the excellence of his workmanship the best trade in this section. Mr. Pappas is an active member
of the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce and is also affiliated with the local camp of the Woodmen of the World.
It was on June 15, 1914, in his native Greece, that Chris J. Pappas was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Zaharopoulou,
who also was born in Greece, and they have a pleasant home at Vallejo. Mr. and Mrs. Pappas have three sons, John
C., born in Cumin, Greece, and George C. and Constantine C. Pappas, born in Vallejo, sturdy young second generation
American representatives of their ancient Grecian family.
