PETER OLIVER NORBEY.
Peter Oliver Norbey, who is now living retired in Vallejo, saw nearly a half century of service as a seafaring
man and passed through many and varied experiences, visiting practically every part of the world, while he also
participated in one of this country's wars. He is a native of Norway, and is a son of Anders and Olea Norbey, the
former of whom was a farmer in his native land and both of whom are now deceased.
Peter O. Norbey received some schooling in his native land, but at the early age of thirteen years he started out
in life on his own account, immigrating to Canada. There he obtained a home on a farm and attended school for a
time. Five years later he went to sea, sailing from Quebec on a merchant vessel, and for fourteen years he was
in the merchant marine service, during which period he called at most of the important ports in both the old and
new worlds. In 1882 Mr. Norbey enlisted in the United States navy as a landsman and after sixteen months became
a chief yeoman and later pay clerk. He served for thirty years in the navy, making a total of forty four years
on the water, a record not often surpassed. During his service in the navy he took an active part in the Spanish-American
war. In 1891, while stationed in Asiatic waters, he was ordered to the Mare Island navy yard at Vallejo, remaining
there until February 13, 1912, when he was retired, and he has since been living in his comfortable and attractive
home here, which' he built in 1895.
Mr. Norbey was married to Miss Katherine M. Donough, who was born and reared in Vallejo and who died in 1914. To
them was born a daughter, Olea, now the wife of D. Dozier. Politically Mr. Norbey has always given his support
to the republican party. He became a member of the Free and Accepted Masons in 1884 and has attained the fourth
degree. He is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
