GEORGE NEIL.
George Neil, who is a member of the well known firm of Neil Brothers, painting contractors of Vacaville, is a native of the county in which he lives and was born on the 23d of October, 1875, a son of Joseph and Martha (Darling) Neil. The father, a native of Pennsylvania, made two trips across the plains in the '60s, traveling in a covered wagon. He located in Solano county and followed farming and dairying near Cordelia, making many substantial improvements on his farm, and some of the stone fences which he built at that time are still standing. Of the children born to him and his wife, the following are living: Charles, George, Joseph, William, Etta and Ella.

George Neil received his educational training in the public schools at Vacaville and at the age of eighteen years was apprenticed to the painting trade, serving for three years under Joseph Hubert, of that city. He learned the business thoroughly in all its details and becamea painter of unusual proficiency and skill. For a number of years he has been in partnership with his brother Joseph, under the firm name of Neil Brothers, and they have commanded the major portion of the work in their line here, the subject having painted practically every house in Vacaville, as well as many of the ranch houses in this vicinity. The brothers have always taken pride in their work and have established a reputation for good work and square dealing. They have also done a good deal of automobile painting and finishing. The larger contracts which they have performed in this locality include work on the Presbyterian community church, the high school and the interior of the new Vacaville grammar school, as well as the Union Hotel and the interior of the new Arlington Hotel, both in Suisun.

George Neil early developed an unusual talent for music, beginning to play at the age of ten years, and he has always been active in music affairs in this locality. A number of years ago he organized the Vacaville band and was its director for five years. He is also a member of the band of Ben Ali temple of the Mystic Shrine at Sacramento, playing the cornet. Fraternally he is a Mason, belonging to the blue lodge at Vacaville, the chapter of Royal Arch Masons and the Commandery of Knights Templar, as well as Ben Ali temple. Mr. Neil has a very comfortable home on a five acre ranch within the city limits of Vacaville.
