HORACE A. LOOMIS.
No review of the influences that have led to the fine social and cultural development of this favored section of California would be complete lacking some general reference to the part taken in that development by that fine social and welfare agency, the Vallejo branch of the Young Men's Christian Association, and particularly to the very definite part taken in the acceleration during recent years of that agency's helpful activities under the administration of Horace A. Loomis, present general seeretary of the branch. With ample preliminary experience as an administrator in welfare work, Mr. Loomis came to Vallejo in September, 1921, as physical director in the local Young Men's Christian Association. Seven months later he was made general secretary of the association and he since has been rendering service in that useful capacity, during this time having done wonders in elevating the standards of accomplishment there. An experienced and expert physical director, Mr. Loomis not only has brought to the local Y. M. C. A. a new realization of the benefits of a sound body, but with this has brought very clearly to the attention of the youth thus under his care a very definite realization of the added benefits of accurate mental training and true character building, constantly emphasizing the correlated advantages of "a sound mind in a sound body," the basis of all substantial physical training. In addition to this and as a natural corollary of character building, he has stressed the importance of Bible study and it is significant of the enthusiasm displayed in this department of the Y's work under his capable direction that the Vallejo Y now holds tenth place in the United States and Canada in examinations successfully passed in Bible study, a distinction in which all take a very proper pride, stimulating an equally proper ambition to advance this rank to a point even closer the top.

Horace A. Loomis was born at St. Paul, Minnesota, December 27, 1891, and was reared in the East, having his public schooling in the schools of Troy, New York, and of North Adams, Massachusetts. He then did special work in the Springfield (Massachusetts) Young Men's Christian Association College and when twenty years of age began his professional activities in connection with Y work, a line which he ever has maintained and which has brought him no small reputation in informed circles, for the success he has attained is something more than a matter of mere local knowledge. During the fourteen years and more in which Mr. Loomis has been engaged in Y work he has kept fully abreast of advancing methods along this line of endeavor and by attendance at Y. M. C. A. summer schools both in New York and in California has kept in touch with all that is best in the development of this wonderful modern social and cultural agency. His first work as a professional was in the capacity of assistant to the physical director of the Y at North Adams, Massachusetts. His services were then transferred to a similar post in the Newton (Massachusetts) Y. He then was made physical director in the Y at Concord, New Hampshire, later held a similar position at Athol, Massachusetts, and then, in September, 1921, as set out above, entered upon his successful professional labors at Vallejo.

On December 25, 1912, Horace A. Loomis was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Bellows, who was born at Allegheny, Pennsylvania, and they have two children, a daughter, Jessie M., and a son, Richard B. Loomis. Mrs. Loomis also is a trained worker in welfare activities and as one of the directors of the Vallejo Young Woman's Christian Association has done much to advance the interests of that admirable social agency. Mr. Loomis is one of the active workers in the ranks of the Vallejo Kiwanis Club and is an enthusiastic town "booster." He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, having been raised a master Mason during the time of his residence at Athol, Massachusetts, and he and Mrs. Loomis both are members of the Vallejo chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
