CHARLES DURNER.
In the annals of Solano county the name of the late Charles Durner ever will occupy a deservedly conspicuous position, for he had rendered important public service here, as postmaster of Benicia and as a representative in the legislature from this district having done well his part in community civic affairs. For years Mr. Durner also had served as the local representative at Benicia for the Wells Fargo Express Company and there were few men in this section of the state who had a wider and a better acquaintance than he. It therefore is but fitting and proper that in this definite history of the region in which he was born and so long had his home there should be carried some brief review of his life and of his services to the community as a tribute to the good memory he left at his passing.

Charles Durner was born in Benicia on January 14, 1861, a son of George and Rosina Durner, pioneers of that place, and was there reared and had his schooling. In the '90s he was appointed local agent for the Wells Fargo Express Company and continued in that service until under the McKinley administration he was appointed to fill the office of postmaster at Benicia, this term of service running for four years. Mr. Durner was for years recognized as one of the leaders in the ranks of the republican party in Solano county and throughout this section of the state and served as the representative from this district in the lower house of the general assembly of the state of California. He was a member of the local lodge of the Knights of Pythias and was for years an earnest participant in the activities of that popular fraternal organization. Mr. Durner died on December 19, 1922.

On January 14, 1883, at Benicia, Charles Durner was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Jane Gerrish of that city, who survives him and who is now living at Berkeley. Mrs. Durner has two daughters, Mrs. Godfrey Rueger of Pasadena and Mrs. M. A. Shade of Berkeley. Mrs. Durner is the daughter of the late Patrick P. Gerrish, mentioned elsewhere in this volume.
