JAMES WILLIAM BROWNLIE, M. D.
Dr. James William Brownlie, city physician and president of the local board of health, a physician of wide general practice in and about Vallejo and one of the best established members of his profession in this section of California, is a native son of Vallejo and his interests have ever centered there, although for some time during the early years of his practice his services were elsewhere engaged. Dr. Brownlie was born on January 3, 1884, and is a son of John and Margaret Ann (Wakerley) Brownlie, the latter of whom was born in Kentucky, daughter of George and Mary Wakerley. The late John Brownlie, who in his generation was one of the best known and most influential men in Solano county, long engaged in the hardware business at Vallejo and a former member of the board of county supervisors, was born in Scotland. During the days of the height of the gold excitement he came to California, in due time locating at Vallejo, and here he spent the remainder of his life, his death occurring in 1908.

Reared at Vallejo, James W. Brownlie received his initial schooling in the schools of that city and early determined upon a professional career, selecting the field of medical practice. After preparatory schooling at Stanford University he entered Cooper's Medical College and in 1908 was graduated from that institution. Upon receiving his diploma Dr. Brownlie was appointed resident physician in the Lane Hospital at San Francisco and after a year of service in that connection became engaged as the physician in the camp of the Truckee Lumber Company at Oroville. Four months later he became a contract surgeon in the United States army and after four months of that form of service resigned and returned to Vallejo, where he ever since has been engaged in general practice and where he has done very well. The Doctor is now serving as city physician and also as president of the local board of health. He is a member of the Solano County Medical Society, the California State Medical Association and the American Medical Association and has a wide acquaintance in the profession throughout the state.

In 1920 Dr. James W. Brownlie was united in marriage to Miss Gladys Mary Todd of San Francisco, daughter of Dr. David W. Todd, a retired army officer. Dr. and Mrs. Brownlie have a pleasant home at Vallejo and have ever taken an interested and helpful part in the general social and cultural activities of the city and of the community at large, doing their part in the promotion of all proper movements for the advancement of the common welfare here. The Doctor is a member of the Masonic fraternity and is well versed in the principles and practices of that ancient order. Since 1925 he has been president of the examining surgeons of the pension bureau for this district, and is a captain in the Medical Corps of the Officers Reserve Corps of the United States army.
