WILLIAM L. BOLTON.
William L. Bolton, head of the firm of Bolton & Steinhauff, proprietors of the City bakery at Vallejo, a veteran
of the Spanish-American war with a record of service in the Philippines and one of the best known citizens of Vallejo,
where he has made his home for years, is a native of the dominion of Canada but has been a resident of California
since the days of his young manhood.
Mr. Bolton was born in the city of Guelph in Wellington county in the province of Ontario, Canada, March 6, 1876,
and was reared on a farm in the vicinity of that place, getting his schooling there. When nineteen years of age,
in 1895, he went over into British Columbia and after a year prospecting around there came down the coast to California
and settled at San Francisco, where he presently entered the employ of the Caldwell & Serner Company, bakers,
and there learned the art and mystery of modern baking. When the Spanish-American war broke out in 1898 he enlisted
his services in behalf of the army and was assigned to the Fourth United States Cavalry, with which command he
saw service in the Philippines.
Upon the completion of his military service, in 1899, Mr. Bolton located at Vallejo, where he became employed in
the Brownlie bakery and where he established his home. For eleven years he continued connected with the operations
of the Brownlie bakery and then, in 1912, he bought the City Bakery at Vallejo and became engaged in business on
his own account. In 1921 he admitted Bruno Steinhauff, an experienced baker, into partnership in this business
and the same has since been carried on under the firm name of Bolton & Steinhauff, with a well equipped and
thoroughly up to date establishment at 424 Santa Clara street. The City bakery does both a retail and wholesale
business and its products are in wide demand throughout the territory it serves, its celebrated "Cream"
bread being a favorite among discriminating buyers in and about Vallejo. Mr. Bolton is a member of the Henry Lawton
Camp of the United Spanish War Veterans and takes an active interest in the affairs of that patriotic organization.
