ERNEST S. WEST.
Among the younger business men of Napa Ernest S. West occupies a favorable position, both on account of his own
individuality and also because of the prestige of the family name, which has been identified with the business
interests of this locality for fifty years. He is a native son of Napa, born here on the 23d day of October, 1904,
and is the son of Walter P. and Amy (Mayfield) West, both of whom are still living in this city, of which they
also are natives.
Walter P. West's father, William West, came to Napa on July 15, 1875, and on August 1st of that year became engaged
in business on Pearl street, conducting the business there until 1900, when he moved to the present location. The
business was started as a sports goods store and has always been conducted along that line, being recognized as
one of the best and most reliable concerns of its kind in this section of the state. William West continued to
conduct the business up to the time of his death, which occurred on December 25, 1924, when his grandson, Ernest
S. West, took it over and has continued it. Walter P. West was reared in Napa and became an employe of the telephone
company there, a connection he maintained for twelve years. He then became engaged in the vulcanizing business
and still continues that business, an expert workman in his line.
Ernest S. West received his education in the public schools of Napa and from his boyhood days spent much of his
leisure time in his grandfather's store, thus becoming well acquainted with the stock and also acquiring a good
knowledge of business methods. He has conducted the business alone since the death of his grandfather in 1924 and
is continuing the fine success which the business has always enjoyed. He carries a full and complete line of sporting
goods, fire arms, fishing tackle, and all the accessory lines that should be found in an up to date store of this
character. He also maintains a repair department and repairs guns and other sporting paraphernalia.
Though comparatively young in years, Mr. West has a thorough appreciation of the underlying ethics of good business
practice and he stands high among the businessmen of the city. Genial and friendly in his social relations, he
easily makes acquaintances and stands deservedly high in the confidence and esteem of all who know him.
