ALBERT PARSONS VOORHEES.
No member of the past generation in Napa county was held in higher esteem than was the late Albert Parsons Voorhees,
who, after a busy and useful life, is now sleeping in the "windowless palaces of rest." His memory will
long be revered by those who knew and admired him, for he possessed to a pronounced degree the essential qualities
of true manhood and good citizenship. He was one of the pioneer business men of Vallejo, and later of Napa, and
he was an important factor in the development and upbuilding of this section. Mr. Voorhees was a native of New
York state, where he received his educational training and where he remained until he was nine years of age. He
then went to Wisconsin with his parents, and he later came to California, locating in Vallejo, where he engaged
in the clothing and men's furnishing business in partnership with John Farnham. Mr. Voorhees remained at Vallejo
until 1876, when he sold his interest in the store and came to Napa, where he formed a partnership with a Mr. Alden
and engaged in the same line of trade. Later Mr. Alden moved to Suisun and thereafter Mr. Voorhees continued the
business alone up to the time of his death, which occurred in August, 1913. He was a man of marked business ability,
sound judgment and wise discrimination, and his efforts were crowned with a very gratifying measure of success.
Mr. Voorhees was married to Miss Deborah A. Farnham, who was born and reared in the state of Maine, whence she
came to California in 1870, joining her brother in Vallejo, where her marriage took place. To this union were born
two children: Albert L., of Napa; and E. Juanita, who is a teacher of music in Napa. Mr. Voorhees became a member
of the Free and Accepted Masons at Vallejo and always retained his affiliation with that lodge. While he was closely
devoted to his business affairs, he also belonged to that class of representative citizens who promote the public,
welfare while advancing individual success. There were in him sterling traits which commanded uniform confidence
and regard, and his memory is today honored by all who knew him.
