WILLIAM HUNT TAPLIN.
Bearing the distinction of being a pioneer in the dairy industry in this locality is William Hunt Taplin, whose
fine ranch is located on the Silverado trail, about two miles south of St. Helena. He is a native of California,
and was born in San Francisco on the 21st of June, 1864, a son of John O. and Louise B. (Hunt) Taplin, the former
of whom was a native of Vermont and the latter of Massachusetts. The father made the long trip across the plains
with ox teams in 1849, while his wife came by sailing vessel around Cape Horn. The family came to St. Helena in
1867 and the father engaged in dairying, continuing in that line up to the time of his death. William H. Taplin
secured his education in the schools of Napa county, and from his youth he was identified with the dairy business,
assisting his father until the latter's death and then engaging in the business on his own account. His fine ranch
is highly improved in every respect and comprises one of the most comfortable and attractive places in this section
of the county. He is a man of marked business ability, sound judgment and energetic methods, being recognized as
one of the enterprising and progressive dairymen of this locality.
Mr. Taplin was married to Miss Clara A. Griffith, who was born and reared in Napa county, a daughter of Calvin
C. and Lydia M. (Sensibaugh) Griffith, a sketch of whom appears on other pages of this work. To Mr. and Mrs. Taplin
have been born three children, namely: Carrie L., the wife of W. E. Cole; William, who was married to Dorothy Maddox,
whose grandmother made the Bear flag, which was raised at Sonoma, proclaiming California's independence of Mexican
rule; and Alice, who is the wife of Ray Thorsen. There are six grandchildren. Mr. Taplin is a member of the Woodmen
of the World, the Grange and the Native Sons of the Golden West. He is a genial and friendly man and has so ordered
his actions as to win and retain the sincere respect and confidence of his associates.
