CAPTAIN GAETANO ROSSI.
Captain Gaetano Rossi is one of the strong, sturdy characters who has contributed largely to the material welfare
of the community where he lives, being a business man of more than ordinary sagacity and foresight, while as a
citizen he is public spirited and progressive in all that the term implies. Mr. Rossi was born in Lombardi, Italy,
on the 29th of September, 1848, and was there reared and educated. He learned the trade of a stone mason, and followed
that vocation for a number of years before coming to the United States, but he never engaged in that occupation
in this country. He came to St. Helena in 1881 and embarked in the hotel business, which he followed successfully
until 1906, when he went to Wallace, Idaho, and there also engaged in the hotel business. He still owns the hotel
in Wallace, which he has leased, and he has returned to St. Helena, where he is now living practically retired
from active business affairs, spending the golden sunset years of his life in leisure and comfort, enjoying the
rest to which his former years of effort have so richly entitled him.
Mr. Rossi served for four years in the Italian army and became a fine rifle shot. While living in Idaho he became
known as one of the best rifle shots in his locality, holding membership in the Wallace Rifle Club. Among his records
is one of forty eight out of a possible fifty, and he is the proud possessor of a number of medals won through
his superior marksmanship. Fraternally he is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, holding membership in the
blue lodge of Wallace, Idaho; the chapter of Royal Arch Masons in St. Helena; the consistory otScottish Rite Masons
in Lewiston, Idaho, and the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine at Spokane, Washington.
Mr. Rossi is the father of two sons, Herman G. and Adolph. Herman G. Rossi, who is engaged in the insurance business
at Wallace, Idaho, is a man of considerable prominence in that state, having represented his district in the state
legislature, and having served as superintendent of public education for the state. Captain Rossi's energetic nature,
strong determination, sagacity and capable management have brought him success in life's arena, and by his exemplary
life he has earned the high esteem in which he is universally held.
