Frank Richter, one of the proprietors of the People's meat market in Calistoga and numbered among the prominent
men of affairs of that place, is a native of Germany, where he was reared and educated. He learned the trade of
a butcher in Goerlite, Germany, serving a four year apprenticeship without pay, and he then served for two years
in the German army, after which he started traveling, working at his trade in various cities in Germany, France
and England. About 1905 he came to the United States, landing at Galveston, Texas, and for a while he worked at
his trade in that state, going from there to Oakland, California, and to San Francisco, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa
and Petaluma, this state. In the last named city he became proprietor of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, which he conducted
for seven years. In 1919 Mr. Richter came to Calistoga and opened a butcher shop, which he ran until January 1,
1925, when he formed a partnership with the Siemsen brothers, and they established what is now widely known as
the People's meat market, one of the best and most up to date markets in this section of Napa county. They own
their own slaughter house and also a stock ranch, so that they are able to raise, kill and sell their own meat.
They do both a wholesale and a retail business and have been very successful in this enterprise, being numbered
among the leading business concerns of Calistoga.
Mr. Richter was married to Miss Amelia Srley, a native of Hungary, and they are the parents of two children: William,
aged ten years; and Hattie, who is nine years of age. Mr. Richter is a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles,
the order of Druids and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. His life record presents a story of strenuous, persistent
and well directed effort, and the success which has finally crowned his labors has been well earned.
