JAMES M. RANEY.
The record of James M. Raney is that of a man who has by his own unaided efforts worked his way from a modest beginning
to a place of independence in the business world and influence in public affairs. His life has been characterized
by indomintable industry and the honorable methods which he has followed have won for him the unbounded confidence
of his fellow citizens of Napa county.
James M. Raney, the present able and efficient Auditor of Napa county, is a native of the city in which he now
lives and was born on the 4th day of September, 1871, the son of C. J. and Mary Jane (Greenwood) Raney, the former
a native of Kentucky and the latter of Missouri. His father crossed the plains, with covered wagon and ox team,
in 1852, and located in the Napa valley, where he followed farming for a number of years. Later he located in San
Francisco, where he was a trusted employee of the United States customs house for twenty five years.
James M. Raney received his educational training in the schools of Napa and his first employment was as a clerk
in a hotel at Winters, Yolo county. He then went to work in the State Hospital at Napa, where he remained for eighteen
years, at the end of which time he resigned his position there and engaged in business in Napa, which he successfully
conducted until his election to the office of county auditor, in which office he is now serving his second term.
His discharge of the duties of this office has been characterized by strict attention to administrative details,
courteous accommodation for all who have business with the office and close supervision over the public interests
in his charge. Politically, Mr. Raney has always supported the democratic party and has been deeply interested
in public affairs, especially those pertaining to the welfare and prosperity of his home county and city. He is
a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and is past president of
the Native Sons of the Golden West. Mr. Raney was married to Miss Caroline Brieston, who was born and reared in
the state of Illinois, and they are the parents of two sons, James B. and Jack Greenwood. Mr. Raney is a fine type
of the sturdy, conscientious, progressive American of today, a man who unites a higher order of ability with courage,
patriotism and sound judgment, doing thoroughly and well whatever he undertakes, and today no man in this community
occupies a higher place in public esteem than he.
