A pronounced characteristic of craftsmen from foreign lands who come to our country is that they thoroughly know
their respective trades, for when a man has finished his apprenticeship there he has become actually a master of
his trade. Bruno Pagendarm, proprietor of the Model Bakery in St. Helena, learned the trade of a baker in his native
country as a youth, and he is today considered one of the best bakers in the community. His products are practically
above criticism and he takes a justifiable pride in turning out nothing but what will pass the most fastidious
inspection and please the most exacting taste. He is a native of Germany and was born on the 9th of June, 1887,
and he attended the schools of his native land. At the age of fourteen years he was apprenticed to the baker's
trade and worked in Bremen and Hamburg.
In 1904, at the age of seventeen years, Mr. Pagendarm immigrated to the United States, arriving at New York, where
he remained for a time, working at his trade and learning the English language in the public schools. He then came
to San Francisco and continued his studies in the night schools. He arrived in 1907, and during the ensuing fifteen
years he was employed in some of the best bakeries in that city, including the Cherry Blossom Bakery, on Haight
street, the Superior Home Bakery, on Castro street, and the Paul Kraus Bakery. In 1922 he came to St. Helena and
bought the Model Bakery and building on Main street. This is one of the oldest bakeries in Napa county, having
been established some fifty years ago. Mr. Pagendarm made a number of permanent and substantial improvements, including
the construction of a new concrete bake oven and the installation of new and up to date machinery for mixing and
other phases of bread and cake making. He makes six kinds of bread and the Model loaf is the most popular bread
sold in this locality. In addition, he makes a full line of pies, cakes, rolls and other products of a modern bakery.
He is jealous of his reputation as a baker and personally supervises the work in his shop, keeping everything up
to a high standard of excellence, and for this reason he is enjoying a large and constantly increasing patronage
among the best people of the community.
Mr. Pagendarm is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Woodmen of the World. He was married
to Miss Katherine Storr, who also is a native of Germany, and they are the parents of a son, Bruno, Jr., who now
lives in San Francisco.
