MRS. LENA E. ORR.
Mrs. Lena E. Orr, who owns and operates the popular Soscol House, which is located on the Napa road, south of Napa, was born in Kansas on the 6th of December, 1880, and is a daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Metzer) Shutter, the former a native of Germany and the latter of France. She received her education in the public schools of her native state and later came to California, making her home in Solano county until 1920, when she became the wife of John P. Orr.

Mr. Orr, whose death occurred October 2, 1924, was born in San Leandro, Alameda county, California, December 18, 1880. His parents were natives of Ireland and were married in Alameda county. He received a good public school education in his home neighborhood and subsequently came to Napa county and was engaged in farming for about five years. He then became one of the first motormen on the Calistoga electric line and later worked for the Great Western Power Company. In 1908 he bought the Soscol House, which is one of the oldest and best known landmarks in Napa county having been established as early as 1860, at which time it was run as a hotel and stage horse depot. During all the intervening years to the present this old inn has enjoyed an excellent reputation and marked popularity with the traveling public, and now, under Mrs. Orr's guiding hand, it is well patronized by a representative class of people, having a high reputation for its splendid meals and its air of comfort and hospitality. For a number of years Mr. Orr was a member of the Naval Reserves and was called into active service in 1906 during the days immediately following the earthquake at San Francisco. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose, while his political support was given to the democratic party. His religious faith was that of the Roman Catholic church, to which Mrs. Orr also belongs. She is a woman of business ability, fine character and amiable qualities and has long enjoyed the sincere respect and esteem of all who know her throughout this locality.
