LEWIS S. MITCHELL.
Lewis S. Mitchell, who is successfully engaged in the hay, grain and poultry supply business in Calistoga, is a
native of Napa county, having been born in Pope valley on the 11th of October, 1881. He is a son of A. J. and Emma
(Wilson) Mitchell, both of whom were born and reared in the state of New Jersey. The father came to Pope valley
when he was twenty years of age. There he built a schoolhouse and then engaged in teaching, which profession he
followed at that place for nineteen years, fifteen years of that time in one building. He has now retired from
active life and is residing in Oakland. To him and his wife were born six children, all of whom are living, namely:
Elcy, Mark, Lewis S., A. Ira, Edith and Robert.
Lewis S. Mitchell received his education in the school in Pope valley, and his first employment was on ranches
in that neighborhood. Later he was for a time engaged in farming on his own account east of St. Helena, and he
then operated a ranch near Calistoga. In 1921 Mr. Mitchell established himself in his present business in Calistoga
and has succeeded to a very gratifying degree. He carries a large supply of hay, grain and feed and a well selected
stock of poultry supplies, and under his wise management his business is rapidly increasing in volume, being now
one of the substantial enterprises of this city.
Mr. Mitchell has been twice married. His first wife was Rebecca Jessen, who died in 1923, and by her he had two
children, Ruth and Claire, both of whom are receiving a college education. In 1925 he was married to Thekla Sielcken.
