WILLIAM MENSING.
The unostentatious routine of private life, although in the aggregate more important to the welfare of the community than any meteoric public career, cannot, from its very nature, figure largely in the public annals. However, the history of each locality should contain mention of those individuals who lead wholesome and exemplary lives and who contribute to the success of the material affairs of a community and to its public stability. In this class may consistently appear the name of William Mensing, an enterprising and substantial business man of Napa, whose career has earned for him the respect and esteem of all who know him.

Mr. Mensing is a native of Germany, where he was born on the 8th of October, 1864, and he is a son of William and Lottie (Koenig) Mensing. The father came to the United States about 1861 and located in Washington, D. C., where he was employed as a gardener. After several years he returned to his native land and there spent the remainder of his days, he and his wife both now being deceased. The subject of this sketch attended the schools of his native land until he was fourteen years of age, when he came to the United States and lived with his father in Washington for three and a half years. When the latter returned to Germany, our subject went to the state of Minnesota, where he was employed at farm work for six years. He then came to Oakland, California, where he also followed agricultural pursuits until 1900, when he went to Alaska. He engaged in mining and remained there for six years, coming to the States once during that period. Some time previous to going to Alaska he had been in Napa, and in 1906 he again came here and went to work on the Stanley farm, later working on the General Muller ranch as a foreman. Then for a short time he was employed at the State Hospital at Napa, after which he turned his attention to business affairs in this city, buying the grocery and soft drink establishment which he is now operating here. He has met with fine success since embarking in this venture, and he has gained the confidence and esteem of all who have had dealings with him.

Mr. Mensing is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Sons of Herman. Politically he has always given his Support to the republican party and has taken a good citizen's interest in all questions affecting the welfare of the general public. He is a keen, wide awake, energetic business man, idleness being foreign to his nature, and under his careful management his business is enjoying a steady increase in volume. In 1924 Mr. Mensing made a trip back to his native land, visting the scenes of his boyhood and also the graves of his parents.
