The qualities which have made Thomas Maxwell one of the most popular men in his section of Napa county have also
brought him success, for persistent effort, progressive methods and loyalty to his community have been the outstanding
characteristics in his career, a record of which he may justifiably be proud.
Mr. Maxwell was born at Kendall, England, in August, 1881, ands he is a son of John Maxwell, who died in 1911,
and a sketch of whom appears on other pages of this work. Thomas Maxwell received his educational training in the
public schools of Napa, where the family had settled on their emigration from England. He left school before completing
his studies in order to assist his father, and on the latter's death he took over the nursery business, which had
been established in 1895, and has continued it to the present time. It is the oldest and best known nursery in
this section of the state, and much fine fruit stock has been planted from its gardens. Mr. Maxwell devotes his
close attention to the business and takes pride in sending out nothing but the very best quality of stock, for
which the nursery is noted throughout central California.
Mr. Maxwell was married to Miss Rose Matinelli, a native of Napa county, and whose parents are now living in San
Jose. Politically Mr. Maxwell is a stanch republican, and he is now serving his third term as supervisor for his
district, in his discharge of these duties having gained additional prestige, for he has handled the public affairs
in the same careful, conscientious manner that he bestows upon his private business, the result being that the
roads in his district have never been kept in as good condition as they have been under his direction. Fraternally
Mr. Maxwell is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and is a third degree member of the Knights
of Columbus. He is a man of genial and accommodating disposition, generous in his attitude toward benevolent and
charitable objects, and he has earned an enviable place in the confidence and esteem of the entire community.
