Numbered with the energetic, enterprising and progressive business men of St. Helena, Napa county, is Carl Hilker,
who has long enjoyed a high reputation among the leading painting contractors of that locality. He is a native
of Oldenburg, Germany, and his birth occurred on the 13th of December, 1888. He was educated in the public schools
of his native land and learned the painting trade there, serving a four year apprenticeship. In 1911 Mr. Hilker
immigrated to the United States, landing at New York city, where he obtained his first job as a painter in this
country, working on the German Hospital. Five months later he came to St. Helena and for some time thereafter he
was the only painting contractor here. During the years that he has been located here he has done a great deal
of the more important jobs in his line, including work on schools, business blocks and many fine residences, arid'
the quality of his work has been his best advertisement. Mr. Hilker has also been active in real estate development
in Napa county, buying, improving and selling ranches, and remodeling and redecorating stores, which he then sells,
likewise following the latter plan with residences, and in this line of effort he has made a Very gratifying profit.
He came to this country a poor boy, and all that he has has been gained solely through his persistent and well
Mr. Hilker is a prominent member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, having served in 1924 as the district
deputy for Napa county. He has passed the chairs of the subordinate lodge and has sat in the grand lodge. He is
also a member of the Improved Order of Red Men. He was married to Miss Emma Corthay, a native of Napa county. Her
parents were born in San Francisco, while her grandparents were natives of France and came to California among
the early pioneers. Mr. and Mrs. Hilker have two children, Carl and Harold.
