REV. J. GALVAN.
Among the able, successful and popular pastors of Napa county, California, is the Rev. J. Galvan, pastor of the Roman Catholic church at St. Helena. Father Galvan has passed through some thrilling and interesting experiences, and he is a man of pleasing personality, who has made many warm friends since becoming identified with this community. He is a native of Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland, and he was born on the 8th of March, 1887. He received his elementary education in the schools of his home neighborhood and completed his studies, preparing for the priesthood, in Thurles College, where he was ordained in 1911. In that same year he came to the United States and was appointed assistant pastor at All Hallows church, San Francisco. Later he became assistant pastor of St. Joseph's church, in Alameda, California, where he was rendering effective service when the United States entered the World war.

Father Galvan promptly offered his services to the government and was sent to Camp Lewis, Washington, where he became regimental chaplain to the Three Hundred and Sixty third Regiment, California Infantry, which became a part of the "Fighting Ninety first" Division. He went overseas with this command and remained with it all through its activities on the fighting line, which included some of the most important and arduous service rendered by the American troops. He remained in France about six months after the signing of the armistice and on his return to this country became pastor of the Catholic church at St. Helena, where he still remains. This is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the Napa valley, having been established in 1875, and the present church edifice was erected in 1886. Rev. Father Blake was pastor of this congregation for thirty years. It embraces about One hundred and fifty families and is in a healthy and flourishing condition. Through his effectual work here and his deep personal interest in the welfare of his people, Father Galvan has gained a warm place in their hearts and has earned the respect and esteem of the entire community, regardless of creed. He is a well educated, cultured Christian gentleman, of strong and forceful individuality, with heart and soul consecrated to his work, and he has been very effectual in stimulating all departments of church activity. He is a forceful and convincing speaker, with the courage of his convictions, and the growth in the size of his audiences is a well deserved compliment to his personality and power as an orator, as well as his ability to stimulate an interest in spiritual things. In the community life of St. Helena, Father Galvan has become a prominent and influential figure, lending his cooperation to the promotion of all measures designed to better the public welfare in any way. He enjoys a wide acquaintance in this locality and has a host of warm and loyal friends, who esteem him for his accomplishments and for his genuine worth as a man.
