GEORGES DE LATOUR.
Georges de Latour has long been known as one of the most successful makers of sacramental wine in the country and
has built up a large and profitable business in that connection. He probably inherited his aptitude in this line,
for he comes of a wine making people and from one of the world's greatest wine regions. He was born at Bordeaux,
France, on the 20th of October, 1856, and secured a good public school and college education in his native land.
On coming to the United States he first located in San Francisco and then went to Tuolumne county, where he engaged
in mining. He had made a study of chemistry, and he served as a chemist at the mines. In 1883 he returned to San
Francisco and there applied himself to the field of chemistry until 1888, when he embarked in business on his own
account, beginning the manufacture of cream of tartar, the principal ingredient of which he bought from the wine
makers throughout this section of the state. He was successful in this venture and established other factories
at San Jose, Healdsburg, Fresno and Rutherford. In 1900 Mr. de Latour bought one hundred and twenty acres of farming
land at Rutherford, which he planted to grapes, and later bought several hundred acres more, and in 1903 he turned
his attention to the making of wine. He makes wine solely for sacramental purposes, and the superior quality of
his product has attracted favorable attention. Mr. de Latour spends his summers at Rutherford but lives in San
Francisco during the winter season.
In 1898 Mr. de Latour was married to Miss Fernande Romer, who was born and reared in Alameda, California, and they
are the parents of two children: Richard, who lives at home; and Helene, who is the wife of the Count de Pins,
an officer in the French army. Politically Mr. de Latour gives his support to the republican party, while his religious
faith is that of the Roman Catholic church.
