SAMUEL CLARKE.
Samuel Clarke is a successful and favorably known farmer near. Napa Junction, who has by his persistent industry and well directed efforts gained a comfortable position in life. He is a native of the north of Ireland and was born on the 24th of May, 1854, a son of Alexander and Martha (Douglas) Clarke, both of whom are now deceased. He received his education in the schools of his home neighborhood, and when he was seventeen years of age he immigrated to the United States. He once to California, locating in Napa in 1871, and during the ensuing four years he was employed on farms of that locality at the end of which time he went to San Bernardino county and worked in the mines at Death valley, remaining there for two years. Mr. Clarke then returned to Napa county and has ever since given his attention to agricultural pursuits, in which he has been eminently successful, now operating three hundred and twenty acres of good land. He has made many improvements of a permanent and substantial nature on his ranch, maintaining it at a high standard.

Mr. Clarke was married to Miss Gertrude Watson, a daughter of George Watson, an old pioneer settler in this section of the state, who crossed the plains three times at an early day. To Mr. and Mrs. Clark have been born eleven children, namely: Margaret L., James W., Samuel A., Gertrude Grace, George A., Mary E., William, Louis H., Robert A., John A. and Hazel. Politically Mr. Clarke is an ardent supporter of the republican party, while fraternally he is a member of the Foresters of America. Having accumulated a competency, he is now able to live more leisurely, and he is practically retired from active business affairs, leaving the operation of the farm to the younger members of the family. He holds a broad view of life, and during his long career he has conscientiously endeavored to perform his duty under all circumstances.
