JAMES E. CLARKE.
Among the younger business men of Napa county who are contributing their quota to the advancement and prosperity
of this locality specific mention should be made of James E. Clarke, manager of the Calistoga Lumber Company, who
is the scion of sterling old pioneers of this locality and whose record thus far has been one of which he may justifiably
be proud. He is a native of Napa county, having been born at Rutherford on the 17th of July, 1898, and he is a
son of Thomas A. and Annie (Black) Clarke, both of whom also are natives of Napa county. Their respective parents
came to this locality in early pioneer days, having crossed the plains in covered wagons in 1848, and took an active
and prominent part in the early development of the state.
James E. Clarke secured his elementary education in the Yount school and then took a course in the Napa Business
College. On August 1, 1918, he entered the employ of the Napa Lumber Company, where he learned the business thoroughly.
What is now known as the Calistoga Lumber Company was formerly the H. C. Thompson Lumber Company, having been bought
some twenty five years ago from its founder, Mr. Nevone, and it is thus one of the oldest lumber companies in Napa
county. The Napa Lumber Company bought the business from Mr. Thompson in May, 1924, bestowed on it the name of
Calistoga Lumber Company and placed Mr. Clarke in charge as manager. He has in a very marked way vindicated their
judgment in placing him in this responsible position, for he has demonstrated that he is the possessor of business
ability of a high order.
Mr. Clarke is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Native Sons
of the Golden West and the Calistoga Rotary Club. He was married to Miss Hazel Potterton, who was born and reared
at St. Helena, Napa county, and they are the parents of a daughter, Jean.
