O. E. CLARK.
After a long and honorable record in connection with the public utility interests of this section, O. E. Clark
is now living retired in Napa, enjoying well earned leisure. He was born in Erie county, New York, in 1844, but
was reared and educated in Michigan. In 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil war, he enlisted in defense of his country,
joining the First Michigan Regiment of Engineers and Mechanics, which was attached to the Army of the Cumberland.
He rendered four years of faithful service, taking part in many of the severest battles and campaigns of that great
struggle, and was in General Sherman's historic march from Atlanta to the sea. In 1879 he went to Leadville, Colorado,
and there engaged in the timber business and in surveying and mining.
In 1890 Mr. Clark came to Napa county, California, and erected the electric light plant for the Thompson-Houston
Electric Light Company, subsequently being made manager of the plant. He was next a traveling representative for
that well known company, being on the road from 1892 to 1897, when he returned to Napa and resumed his former posh
tion. This concern bought the Napa Gas Company and combined the two under the name of the Napa Gas & Electric
Light Company, and Mr. Clark was appointed manager of the new organization. Subsequently it was taken over by the
Pacific Gas & Electric Company, and Mr. Clark served as manager of the latter from 1901 to 1920, when he retired
from active work, having since been living quietly in his comfortable home in Napa.
In 1869, in Michigan, Mr. Clark was married to Miss Vera M. Hyde, who was born and reared in New York state, and
they are the parents of one son, Ray D., who lives in Fresno, California. Mr. Clark is a member of the Napa post
of the Grand Army of the Republic, of which there are now only six surviving members, and he is also a member of
the Free and Accepted Masons and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Since he first came to Napa he has always
maintained a fine interest in the development and prosperity of this locality and has consistently given his support
to every measure for the improvement of local conditions.
