JOSEPH R. CLARK.
Among the citizens of Napa county who hold an honored place in local history is Joseph R. Clark, of Calistoga,
who for a number of years has been prominently identified with the real estate business and has been an important
factor in the growth and development of his section of the county. Mr. Clark was born in Yolo county, California,
on the 9th of October, 1878, and he received his educational training in the public schools at Woodland and the
high school in Berkeley. He subsequently entered his father's office at Woodland with the intention of studying
law, but on account of poor health he was forced to give this up, relunctantly relinquishing his ambition for a
professional career. He then worked for a time in the grocery store of Frank Anderson, in Oakland, thoroughly learning
the business, and next became manager of the Frank McClain grocery store in Berkeley, later filling a similar position
with D. R. Shafer in that city.
Mr. Clark then embarked in the grocery business on his own account at Cloverdale, Sonoma county, where he remained
about eight years, at the end of which time, in 1915, he came to Calistoga and engaged in the insurance and real
estate business. He has represented an excellent line of insurance companies and has done a gradually increasing
business in this field. However, it is in real estate circles that he has achieved his most pronounced success,
having sold over six hundred thousand dollars worth of land and lots in this vicinity. He subdivided the Stosser
addition of forty lots and the Clark addition, near the high school, and much other valuable property has been
sold through his instrumentality. He advertised extensively in the Los Angeles and San Francisco papers and was
the prime factor in inducing forty families to locate permanently in the Calistoga district. Mr. Clark himself
owns some valuable real estate in the city, including the fine, modern business block which he has recently completed,
and known as the Clark block, on Lincoln avenue. In every way possible he has been a booster for Calistoga and
vicinity and his efforts have been rewarded with very tangible results.
Mr. Clark was married to Miss May Baird, who was born and reared at Woodland, California, and they are the parents
of three children: Wayne, who is an expert radio engineer; Florence, who is a student in the Armstrong school at
Berkeley; and Bruce.
