The prosperity which has come to Bernard Benitou, proprietor of the Pearl Steam Laundry at St. Helena, has been
honestly earned, for he has worked hard and persistently, giving intelligent direction to his efforts, and today
he is held in high regard by all who know him. He was born on a farm near Pau, France, on the 2d of February, 1888,
and he was reared in his native land, securing his education in the schools of his home neighborhood. In 1908 he
immigrated to the United States, coming at once to California. His first employment here was in the French Laundry
in San Francisco, from which he went to a laundry in Los Banos, Merced county, and later to a laundry in Vallejo.
He then went to work in the Pullman shops at Richmond, California, where he remained until coming to St. Helena,
and here he bought the Pearl Steam Laundry, which is one of the oldest establishments of the kind in Napa county,
having been started about thirty five years ago. Mr. Benitou made a number of fine improvements in the mechanical
equipment of the laundry and is now in a position to take care of any work and in a manner that will please the
most exacting. Since taking over this business he has enjoyed a constantly increasing trade, and he is numbered
among the successful and representative business men of his locality.
Mr. Benitou was married to Miss Marie Barneich, who was born and reared at Los Banos, and they are the parents
of a daughter, Madeline, now eight years of age. Fraternally he is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows
and the Woodmen of the World. He is a man of sound business ideas, is energetic in his methods and is fair and
square in his dealings with the public.
