LEO J. ALEXANDER.
An important industrial concern of southern Napa county is the Basalt Rock Company, of which Leo J. Alexander was the organizer and is now the president. The products of the firm are well known and are widely used throughout the central part of the state. Mr. Alexander has shown sound judgment and marked business ability in the management of the enterprise and is accounted a progressive and enterprising business man. A native of Napa, he was born on the 2d of August, 1894, and is a son of W. F. and Alice (Harberland) Alexander. The father crossed the plains to this state in 1851, locating on a ranch in Napa county, to the operation of which he devoted himself for twenty five years. During the ensuing ten years he was engaged in the milling and feed business, and he is now the manager of the Associated Oil Company at Napa, enjoying a high standing among his business contemporaries. Leo J. Alexander secured a practical education in the public and high schools of Napa and then entered the employ of the Associated Oil Company as a salesman. In 1914 he organized the L. J. Alexander Company, which was incorporated in 1923 as the Basalt Rock Company and maintains offices in Napa. The plant is located about three miles south of Napa and employs about fifty men, and the product consists of crushed rock, which is used in all kinds of paving and in reinforced concrete work. The crushed stone is loaded into buckets attached to an endless cable and is thus conveyed to the railroad, where it is dumped into cars. The cable crosses the state highway and frequently excites the interest and curiosity of travelers on the highway.

Mr. Alexander was married to Miss Georgia Bruce, of Portland, Oregon, and they have one child, Donna. Politically Mr. Alexander is an adherent of the republican party, and he supports all local measures for the advancement of the public welfare. He is considerate and friendly in his social relations and is eminently deserving of the high place which he occupies in popular esteem.
