LEAGUE, JAMES N. Was born in Hannibal, Missouri, June 29, 1845. At the age of sixteen he entered the Confederate
service and served about eighteen months. He then went to St. Louis, where he attended Commercial College for one
year. We next find him in Balls County, Missouri, engaged in merchandising, which he followed about two years.
In the spring of 1868 he came via Panama to California, and, after spending one year in Lake County camping, returned
East and established a boot and shoe store in Glasgow, Missouri. This he conducted until June, 1870, when he again
came to California and to Lake County. He located at Lakeport, where he engaged in merchandising until June, 1876,
when he changed his residence and business to Upper Lake, where he has since resided. Mr. League married, November
20, 1872, Miss Jennie Man, a native of Missouri. By this union they have two children: Ida and Thomas L.
