EMERSON, S. R. Was born in Cortland County, New York, March 28, 1820. Here he remained until 1849, being engaged
in farming and stock raising. He then went to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1857, being
engaged in the stock business. In the last named year he came to California via Panama, and arrived at San Francisco
April 27th. He engaged at once in farming and dairying in Sonoma County, which was followed until 1859, when he
turned his attention to wool growing. This he continued until 1860, when he engaged in hotel keeping in Windsor,
Sonoma County, which was followed until 1869. In 1870 he made a trip East and spent the summer, returning to California
in the winter of 1870-71. He came at once to Lake County and engaged in wool growing, which he has since followed.
Mr. Emerson owns the Witter Spring property, a history of which will be found in this volume.
